latest trailer for Netflix’s Ripley!

We’ve all read or seen films based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, so we’re all familiar with some elements of the story. But Steven Zaillian, the writer/director of Netflix’s next series, offers a novel approach. Ripley tells the tale of Tom (Andrew Scott), a crafty and astute man whose routine existence takes an unexpected turn when he meets Dickie Greenleaf’s (Johnny Flynn) father. The story is set in 1960s New York City and several locations in Italy. Along with his companion Marge, the wealthy playboy eloped to Europe (Dakota Fanning). The first teaser for Ripley highlights the many investigators actively looking for Tom, while The Talented Mr. Ripley concentrates on Tom’s slow penetration into Dickie’s life.

For those who have seen the original Ripley story, the trailer’s beautifully rendered black-and-white shots show Tom fumbling with his passport, answering Italian detectives at his door, and standing on a tiny boat in the middle of a big ocean. The series’ many turns and turns are alluded to in these images. But the teaser deftly leaves viewers wondering if for the entire season, Andrew Scott’s portrayal of Ripley will continually radiate an unmistakable “I’m not to be trusted” air, or if he’ll show a more endearing side. As April 4th approaches and Ripley makes her debut, the excitement grows.
