Bungie’s iconic sci-fi shooter Marathon is currently available for free on Steam

Marathon existed prior to the development of Halo and Destiny, and Steam users may now play this iconic sci-fi shooter. Recently, Bungie shocked fans by revealing that the first game in the original trilogy is now playable for free on Steam, compatible with both Mac and PC.

Although Aleph One Developers is credited with creating the game and describes it as a “open-source continuation of Bungie’s Marathon 2 game engine,” the complete trilogy can be downloaded for Linux, Mac, and PC. With plans from Bungie to also release the sequels, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity, on Valve’s platform, the Steam launch expands the player base for these games.

Marathon laid the groundwork for Bungie’s other triumphs, such as Halo, even if it never achieved the same level of commercial success as their other science fiction properties. Significantly, the franchise is reviving: Bungie revealed this year that a new Marathon is under development, a PvP extraction shooter that would launch in 2025.
